Arrest Made After Fatal South Lake Tahoe Hit-and-Run
On Monday, October 7, 2019, local authorities arrested the suspected driver in a South Lake Tahoe hit-and-run accident that tragically cost one person their life. According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), the accident took place the day prior at an intersection within city limits after the sun had set and involved a pedestrian and single vehicle. Officials have identified the decedent as 78-year-old Edwin Harshman of South Lake Tahoe.
Crash Details
According to police, the accident happened just prior to 8:00 p.m. on Lake Tahoe Boulevard at the intersection of Fairway Avenue. The Idaho man had been crossing the street in a crosswalk when he was struck by a black car. The collision reportedly threw the pedestrian out onto the road. The vehicle immediately drove away from the scene of the crash.
Police were contacted about the crash by witnesses directly after it took place. When responders reached the injured pedestrian, they discovered that he had suffered critical trauma. Medics reportedly attempted to give the man life-saving aid but were unable to stabilize him. Sadly, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Arrest
The alleged driver, a 20-year-old Tahoe local, was arrested after he turned himself in to the police station at 12:30 a.m. on Monday. Officers were reportedly able to connect the man’s car with the accident and placed him under arrest for felony hit-and-run before booking him into the El Dorado County Jail. His bail has been set at $75,000.
How Fatal Accidents Affect Families
When families suddenly lose one of their loved ones, the emotional impact can be devastating. Dealing with a sudden death in your family can often leave you feeling overwhelmed by a complex set of emotions, and meeting the demands of your normal, daily life can be a challenge. However, many families are often left with pressing financial issues that can make it difficult to focus on healing personally. In addition to medical costs related to the fatal crash, families also often suffer a serious loss of income, household services, and need to pay for funeral services, burial costs, and more.
Because these concerns can seriously affect families, those who’ve been affected by a fatal crash are able to file wrongful death claims in order to claim compensation for what they have lost. The compensation available in a wrongful death case varies depending on the circumstances, but families are often able to obtain payments for both financial and personal losses, affording them the stability they need during a difficult time.
