Attorneys Handling Complex Car Accidents

Some car accidents are very complex and in some cases require experts to investigate. One accident occurred during the morning hours of Friday, January 27, 2017, where an alleged negligent driver made a left turn from a stop sign in front of an oncoming vehicle in South Los Angeles. The approaching vehicle veered out of the way of this driver to avoid a T-bone collision. While doing so, the veering motorist of the oncoming vehicle lost control and entered the opposing lanes of travel. This vehicle crashed into an oncoming school bus and other vehicles. Unfortunately, the driver that made the left turn in front of oncoming traffic continued down the street without making any attempt to see if the occupants in the crashed vehicles were okay.

What Happened?

A driver of a 1998 Isuzu was traveling southbound along Normandie Avenue in the left lane at approximately 6:30 am. As the driver was approaching the intersection of South Normandie Avenue and West 65th Street, an unidentified white sedan pulled out directly in front of them to make a left turn onto North Normandie Avenue.

Isuzu Driver Avoids White Sedan

The driver of the Isuzu acted on quick instinct and swerved out of the way of the white sedan. While doing so, the Isuzu driver was able to avoid the white sedan but unfortunately lost control of their vehicle. The Isuzu driver then crossed over the double solid lines into the northbound lanes of Normandie Avenue and into the path of a Los Angeles Unified School District bus and other vehicles. The school bus was traveling in the right-hand lane before the Isuzu collided with the bus and other vehicles. The bus then collided with two parked vehicles, a 1993 Toyota and a 1984 Chevrolet sedan. The bus drove over the parked Chevrolet sedan, dragging the sedan underneath it and came to a complete stop after crashing into a wood utility pole. The owner of the mangled Chevrolet sedan was thankful that he was not in his vehicle at the time of this accident.

Was Anybody Injured?

The 39-year-old man behind the wheel of his Isuzu and the 51-year-old bus driver, both residents of Los Angeles, were taken to the hospital for treatment. Both motorists were hospitalized due to their injuries. There were seven students on the school bus at the time of the bus accident. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), four out of the seven students complained of pain. These students were released by authorities when their parents arrived at the scene.

Who Caused the Accident?

Upon viewing the video from above, it seems that the unidentified white sedan caused this automobile and bus accident. The alleged negligent motorist of the white sedan appears to have failed to yield the right-of-way to the oncoming Isuzu driver traveling in the left southbound lane of Normandie Avenue. By the quick reflexes of the Isuzu driver swerving out of the way of the white sedan, this prevented an accident that could have resulted in traumatic injuries or even fatalities. If this white sedan had waited until the road was clear to conduct a safe left-hand turn, this accident would have never happened.

Sudden Emergency Doctrine

The motorist of the Isuzu acted in what is considered a “Sudden Emergency Doctrine” in the California Civil Jury Instructions (CACI) #452. This motorist does not appear to be at fault because his actions were carried out with reasonable care in this emergency situation. By the motorist of the Isuzu driving out of the way of the white sedan, he prevented an automobile accident that could have caused more traumatic injuries or even death.
