Auburn Man Trapped After Grass Valley Crash
Reports issued by area California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that a man from Auburn was trapped inside his vehicle for hours following a car accident that took place near Grass Valley on Thursday, January 3, 2018. The man has only been identified as a 46-year-old Auburn resident, and responders say that he suffered serious trauma during the accident. According to officials, the crash involved only one vehicle, and no other individuals were in the car at the time of the collision. Updates on the condition of the injured Auburn man have not been released by hospital staff. Additionally, CHP is actively investigating possible causes of this collision.
Crash Details
Officers reported that the collision happened at about 10:30 p.m. The Auburn man had been driving a 200 Saturn north on McCourtney road southwest of Grass Valley close to the intersection of Paddock Lane. At this time, the Saturn drifted off of the roadway and eventually struck a tree. The collision crumpled the driver’s side of the Saturn and left the man trapped inside his vehicle. Reports stated that the man remained trapped in his vehicle for about ten hours before he was found by area residents at approximately 8:30 a.m. the following morning, Friday, January 4, 2018.
Response
After the wreck was discovered, CHP officers, as well as personnel from Grass Valley Fire Department and Sierra Nevada Medics, responded to the incident. Firefighters at the crash scene used the Jaws of Life to cut away the Saturn’s doors and roof so that they could free the driver from the twisted metal. After the man was safely removed from the car, he was placed on a helicopter ambulance that had landed in the nearby Nevada County Fairgrounds. He was flown to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center to receive treatment for serious injuries.
Investigation
CHP has stated that they do not know what factors caused this crash. However, officers did note that the driver is not suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision. While no further causes were mentioned, common crash factors in single-vehicle collisions include medical issues that affect the driver’s ability to operate their vehicle, driving on roads with dangerous pavement defects or other hazards, vehicle part defects, and more.
