Audi A3 Engine Control Software Recall

The Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) has recently issued a recall on some of their luxury coupe and sedan vehicles. The reason for the recall originates from a safety issue pertaining to alleged defective software affecting the engine performance of various vehicles.

Recall Details

Volkswagen has released a recall of certain Audi A3 vehicles for an issue in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) software. The components affected by the recall include the engine and engine cooling systems of some vehicles. Reports have indicated that the software may improperly interpret some readings for the flywheel rotation upon start-up as a “knocking” condition. The adjusted fuel/air mixture may lead to an engine stall, resulting in the increase risk of an automobile accident.

What is an Engine Control Unit?

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is located under the dashboard of the vehicle behind the glove compartment. The function of this unit is to read and convert readings from various system sensors to control the fuel injection system, ignition timing and idle speed control system. The unit also plays a major role increasing the responsiveness and power of the engine with less pollution and greater fuel efficiency.

The ECU also assists in vehicle maintenance. The unit receives readings from different sensors and deciphers the required intervals for future maintenance. The ECU delivers a message to the motorist when a problem is detected inside the drivetrain. Issues such as oil conditions are monitored and maintained by this system. If you suspect that the ECU of your vehicle is not functioning as intended, it is vital to have the system inspected and/or replaced as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Affected Vehicles

The recall affects nearly 8,383 of the following vehicles:

  • 2017 to 2018: Audi A3 Cabriolet and A3 Sedan

Recall Remedy

Owners will be notified by Audi if their vehicle is included in the recall. The ECU software will be reprogrammed by authorized dealers at no charge to vehicle owners. The recall is expected to start September 29, 2017. For more information, owners may contact the Audi customer service line at (800) 253-2834.

Products Liability Regarding Defective Vehicles

Automobile accidents resulting from a defect in a car, motorcycle, SUV, truck or other motor vehicle can, consequently, lead to devastating injuries or even death. If a party has suffered injuries and/or property damages in an accident due to a potential defective vehicle or vehicle part, that party may be able to file a products liability claim. Such claims require extensive research by experienced experts. It is important to contact a Fresno car accident lawyer with years of experience to investigate further into the matter.
