Authorities Detain Hit-and-Run Driver Near Winton
I’m Ed Smith, a Merced car accident lawyer. A two-vehicle accident occurred near Winton during the early morning hours of Saturday, September 2, 2017. One of the motorists allegedly fled the scene following the collision. Thankfully, authorities were able to track down the hit-and-run driver a short distance from the collision site.
What Happened?
A 40-year-old Winton man was driving his vehicle near the intersection of Winton Way and Ivy Street at about 2:26 am. The man’s vehicle collided with another car driven by an elderly woman. The man immediately fled the scene following the accident.
Authorities from the Atwater Police Department were immediately contacted regarding the accident. Investigators were able to track down the hit-and-run driver a short distance from the crash at a local gas station along Winton Way and Santa Fe Drive.
Was Anybody Injured?
The identity of the elderly woman involved in the hit-and-run accident has not yet been released. However, officials stated that the woman was shaken up after the incident. Reports indicated that the woman did not require medical treatment at the scene.
What Caused the Accident?
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Traffic Collision Reports usually take seven to ten days from the date of an accident to be processed. However, officials reported that the hit-and-run driver had been allegedly driving drunk at the time of the collision. Records from the Merced County Jail revealed that the man had been booked on driving on a suspended license, hit-and-run and suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Previous records indicated that the man had been previously detained in December 2016 for also driving on a suspended license and on suspicion of drunken driving. He was released from custody on Monday, September 4, 2017.
Importance of Uninsured/Under-Insured Motorist Coverage
It is vital to include uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage (UM) on an auto policy. There has been a notable increase in hit-and-run accidents throughout California. Such incidents tend to occur due to drunk drivers or lack of insurance. Having this type of coverage on your auto policy can ensure you will be covered for your losses.
