Bicycle Accident Involving School Bus Near Fresno
A bicycle accident involving a school bus occurred near Fresno on the afternoon of Monday, August 28, 2017. The collision, unfortunately, caused a young boy to suffer traumatic injuries.
What Happened?
A Fresno Unified School District bus was traveling southbound along Maple Avenue near Clinton Avenue. At the same time, a woman was driving northbound along Maple Avenue and stopped at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Clinton Avenue, waiting to conduct a left turn. She witnessed a school bus traveling southbound along Maple Avenue making a right turn. At the same time, a young bicyclist was traveling in the same direction and allegedly struck the right side of the school bus. The school bus allegedly continued from the collision scene to drop off 57 students at the Scandinavian Middle School. Thankfully, the woman that witnessed the bicycle accident stopped to assist the injured victim.
Was Anybody Injured?
All of the occupants in the school bus escaped injuries following the collision. However, the young boy riding a bicycle suffered a knee injury. He was transported via ground ambulance to the Valley Children’s Hospital.
What Caused the Bicycle Accident?
The cause of the accident has not yet been released by officials. A Traffic Collision Report typically takes about 10 days from the date of an accident to be processed.
Bicycle Accidents
Bicyclists are among the most vulnerable travelers on the road. The reason is that bicyclists have no form of protection against motor vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report stated that bicyclists accounted for 2% of all crash-related injuries and 2% of traffic fatalities in 2014. A large percentage of bicycle accidents may be avoided if cyclists and motorists follow the rules of the road and keep an eye out for each other. However, such occurrences are unavoidable.
Some of these accidents tend to occur due to:
- A motorist conducting a left or right turn in front of a bicyclist
- A vehicle rear-ending a stopped or slower bicyclist
- Distracted drivers
- Drunk drivers
- Reckless drivers
