Bicyclist Killed in Sacramento Hit and Run Accident

Man Killed in Hit and Run Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento bicycle accident lawyer. Police in Sacramento are searching for a hit and run driver who killed a bicyclist along Gerber Road on Sunday, August 13.

I want to extend my sympathy and prayers to the family of this man in their time of trial and sorrow.

What Happened?

The bicycle rider was on the shoulder of Gerber Road, with a second bicycle in tow when the accident occurred, and the driver of the vehicle that struck him fled the scene without stopping. The bicyclist who passed away has been identified as Joseph Stanley, 42, a resident of Sacramento.

Information Sought

The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver’s vehicle sustained damage in the collision with the bicyclist that left tell-tale evidence as to the type of vehicle. The police are seeking information on a Cadillac Sedan, red in color. It could be a model CTS, which is a luxury mid-size vehicle. The police believe the vehicle will exhibit a headlight that is broken and damage on the right front. If anyone has information regarding this accident, they should phone the CHP in South Sacramento.

Bicycle Accidents in Sacramento

Sacramento ranks high in the number of bicycle accidents and fatalities. In 2014, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 213 bicycle riders were either injured or killed in the city. This ranked Sacramento as number five out of other similar-sized cities in the state. Of the number killed and injured, 30 were under the age of 15. That same year, there were 267 hit and run accidents.

Incidence of Bicycle Accidents

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that bicycle accidents comprise 1 percent of all accidents from trips. However, bicycle riders experience a much higher rate of fatalities and injuries than those in motor vehicle accidents. The statistics for 2015 show 467,000 injuries from bike accidents, along with more than 1,000 fatalities. ScienceDaily reports that the cost of bicycle accident injuries are rising each year by $789 million.

Common Acute Injuries Suffered in a Bicycle Accident

American Family Physician states that common injuries suffered in bicycle accidents include the following:

  • Head injuries occur in up to 47 percent of bicycle accidents
  • Facial trauma
  • Blunt trauma, causing abdominal injuries
  • Neck trauma such as cervical strain
  • Dental injuries
  • Abrasions, contusions, and lacerations
  • Broken bones

Those who have been injured because of the negligent actions of a motor vehicle driver, roadway defects, a manufacturing defect in the bicycle itself and other causes benefit greatly from consulting with an experienced bicycle accident lawyer. A seasoned lawyer can help by compiling the evidence to determine fault in the crash. The lawyer can assist in recovering fair compensation for an injured person or by instituting a wrongful death lawsuit to recover damages for the family of a deceased victim.
