Renovated SAFE Performing Arts Center Reopens
The newly-renovated SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center, located at 1301 L Street in Sacramento, opened its doors on September 15, 2021, with the premiere of the blockbuster musical Hamilton, performances of which will run at the venue through October 10th.
Hamilton Comes to Sacramento
For many of us, one of the highlights of home entertainment during the pandemic was viewing the smash musical performed by the original Broadway cast, which was released in movie format on Disney+. The movie and Broadway versions starred Lin-Manuel Miranda in the role of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Miranda also wrote the script, lyrics, and music for Hamilton. The cast of the original production was stellar, with unforgettable performances by Daveed Diggs playing dual parts – Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette – and Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr.
The cast of the Sacramento production is outstanding as well, in particular, Julius Thomas III in the leading role, and Victoria Ann Scovens as his wife, Eliza Hamilton. For anyone worried that the show may not be as enjoyable without the original cast, those fears are unfounded – incredible talent is on display in the Sacramento production.
Tickets for Hamilton
Unfortunately, if you have not purchased tickets yet, they are only available through third-party sellers such as Stub Hub. A limited number of seats are still available for many of the upcoming dates but expect to pay well over the original ticket price.

The SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center
Previously known as the Community Center Theater, the venue has been in the process of renovation and expansion by the City of Sacramento since 2019. At re-opening, it was given its new name. It will join the other recently renovated venues of the Memorial Auditorium and the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center (previously called the Sacramento Convention Center) to make up the SAFE Credit Union Convention and Performing Arts District. The total funding for the three building renovations (which were known collectively during construction as the C3 Project) was $368 million.
The building housing the Performing Arts Center was opened in 1976 and had not undergone any renovations or expansion in the four prior decades. The newly renovated building has 2,193 seats in addition to 24 wheelchair seating areas. Along with keeping the facility competitive within the artistic landscape of the city, the renovations address updated code and building requirements that have emerged over the past 40 years.
Improvements to the venue include:
- A prominent main entryway on L Street
- Widespread ADA improvements
- More restrooms
- Bigger lobbies
- Extensive performance and technical system upgrades
- Expansive windows, bringing the outdoors inside
- A more open floor plan
- Renovated dressing rooms
- New finishes
- New and refurbished seating for audiences
- Efficient loading docks
- Additional points of sale for food and beverage
COVID-19 Requirements at SAFE Performing Arts Center
For the Hamilton performances, all patrons must show either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend, and masks are required inside at all times.
