Recall on BMW SUV Powertrain
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced information regarding a recall of approximately 122,000 BMW sport utility vehicles equipped with four-wheel-drive.
Why?
The recall includes the area of concern for the powertrain of the BMW SUVs. The front driveshaft’s universal joint of the vehicle was supplied by the South Carolina based company, IFA Rotorion North America. This component of the vehicle may not have been created to meet proper specifications. This is due to the seal of the universal joint that may not function as intended.
In the incident of the universal joint, allowing water or dirt to enter into the joint may result in excessive corrosion and wear. This may cause the joint to eventually break, leading the occupants of the vehicle to the increased risk of an automobile accident.
Which Vehicles?
The following vehicles are included in the BMW powertrain failure recall:
- 2011 to 2013: X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive 50i, X5 M, and X5 xDrive35d
- 2011 to 2014: X6 xDrive 35i, X6 xDrive50i, X6 M and X6 Active Hybrid
Damaged Universal Joint Symptoms
Owners of the BMW SUVs included in the powertrain failure recall will notice symptoms of a damaged universal joint while driving. Symptoms will include noise and eventually vibration stemming from the front area of the drivetrain. The noise and vibration will likely increase before the component fails.
When Will BMW Fix My SUV?
BMW will be mailing recall letter notices to owners of the affected vehicles on or before April 24, 2017. By then, owners will be able to take their vehicles to their local BMW dealers to have their front driveshaft repaired at no charge.
