Bone Fragments and Traumatic Brain Injury

I’m Ed Smith, a Brain Injury Lawyer in Sacramento. One of the most common associated injuries when someone suffers neurological trauma is a fracture of the skull. While the skull is one of the tougher bones in the body, it has the potential to fragment just as any other bone. When this happens, these bone fragments could damage the brain tissue itself, leading to dire consequences.

Trauma and a Fractured Skull

Someone who sustains blunt force trauma to the side of their head is at risk for suffering numerous traumatic injuries; however, one of the more likely ones is a fractured skull. When someone sustains a skull fracture, it is possible that their skull could sustain a hairline crack. On the other hand, their skull could also splinter into multiple pieces. When this happens, the fragments could penetrate the brain tissue that lives underneath, leading to a wide variety of symptoms of a traumatic brain injury. This could manifest in a number of different ways depending on the location in the brain that the shards penetrate.

Traumatic Brain Injury Resulting from Bleeding

Once someone has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, it is important to establish the cause. In the case that someone has fractured their skull, the bone fragments have the potential to slice open the important blood vessels that live in the brain. When this happens, blood can start to leak into brain, causing increased intracranial pressure. When a patient has increased intracranial pressure, they could start to show an altered mental status along with changes in motor and sensory function. Emergent treatment with surgery could be necessary and even lifesaving.

Surgery could be Required

When someone has sustained a traumatic brain injury, there are many different types of treatment; however, surgery could be required both to fix the fractured skull and to evacuate the skull cavity of any blood that is leading to an increased intracranial pressure. While this surgery could be emergent, health insurance companies could still offer plans that lead to a high deductible. This can place families under major amounts of stress and may leave them with more questions than answered. Families who are processing a traumatic brain injury should consider speaking with a brain injury lawyer in Sacramento to learn more about the next steps.
