Safety Tips for Brain Injury
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just released a helpful list of brain injury safety tips. By focusing on injury prevention, long-term health complications can be avoided. Because a TBI can occur at any time and in any age group, these brain injury safety tips apply to everyone.
Brain Injury Prevention in Children
If a traumatic brain injury takes place in children, this can impact the growth and development of vital neuronal connections. Some of the tips that parents and children should follow to avoid head injuries include:
- Use the Right Seat: Babies, toddlers, and children need to sit in a proper car seat. Babies need to be placed in a car seat that fits their height and weight, preferably in the middle of the back seat of the vehicle. Toddlers and children should ride in a booster seat until they reach the proper height to graduate to a regular seat. Children should always sit in the back.
- Safety Gates: Toddlers are naturally curious. Sometimes, this curiosity can lead to dangerous tumbles down the stairs. Prevent this from happening by placing safety gates in front of the stairs.
- Proper Protection: When children participate in sports, they should always wear the appropriate safety gear. This means wearing proper shoes, pads, and helmets when necessary. Remember, not all helmets are created equally. Some provide better protection than others.
Brain Injury Safety Tips for Adults
The CDC also has some helpful tips for preventing brain injuries in adults as well. Some of these include:
- Bicycle and Motorcycle Safety: Helmets are a must while riding a bike or motorcycle. Everyone should also wear bright clothing that makes them easier to spot. Avoid riding at night or in poor weather conditions if possible. Problems with visibility can increase the chances of an accident and TBI.
- Car Safety: Motor vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of brain injuries. Never drive after drinking and always stay under the speed limit. Always wear a seat belt because this can prevent brain injuries and save lives in the event of an accident.
Preventing Brain Injuries in the Elderly
A traumatic brain injury can be devastating in elderly individuals, possibly leading to a stroke or hemorrhage. To prevent brain injuries in the elderly:
- Railings and Stairs: Railings are an essential part of preventing TBIs in the elderly because they can prevent severe falls from taking place. When possible, elderly individuals should take ramps instead of stairs for added safety.
- Soft Surfaces: Soft surfaces can prevent an injury if a fall takes place. Carpet is the preferred surface because it doesn’t get slippery and provides some added padding. Rubber flooring is another good option for preventing brain injuries from occurring.
