Tips for Driving in a Winter Storm
A winter storm has taken over various regions of California. However, many drivers in California may not be aware of some of the tips on how to safely operate a motor vehicle in weather like this.
Driving in Severe Weather
Severe weather conditions can significantly increase the potential and risk of a dangerous situation for drivers and their passengers on the roadway. Often times, the best decision any driver can make is to stay off the roadway until the weather clears.

The following video uploaded by the American Automobile Association (AAA) describes how we can all better prepare ourselves and our vehicles before backing out of the driveway onto wet and windy roadways. Watch this short video to learn more.
How to Drive in Winter Storm Conditions
When driving in heavy winds, you have to anticipate gusts, be alert of larger vehicles and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel. When driving in heavy rain, you should take your time, make sure that your lights are on and allow more space for other vehicles on the road. Driving too fast in inclement weather can lead to an accident and potentially loss of life.
Avoid Using Cruise Control
Avoid using cruise control when driving. Cruise control is recommended in dry conditions, however, it is not the best option for a driver to use in wet conditions. When a driver uses cruise control in the rain, they face an increased chance of losing control of their vehicle. This happens as a result of losing traction. The use of cruise control delays the driver from being able to react quickly in situations. We advise our clients to avoid the use of cruise control in wet weather.
How to Respond to Vehicle Skidding
Even the most careful motorists can skid sometimes. It is important to remain calm if this happens. When a driver’s vehicle begins to skid, it is best for the driver to look and steer the vehicle in the direction that the driver wants the vehicle to go. Drivers must also avoid making a hard-brake in order to prevent the imbalance of the vehicle which could result in loss of control.
Review of Rainy Driving Tips
We want our readers to stay safe while driving in stormy weather and heavy rain. Please remember to take your time. Slowing down is the number one way to keep your car from hydroplaning. Turn your headlights on. This will help other drivers see you. Give more space to other vehicles around you. Finally, don’t fool around with your phone. Wait until you reach your destination to check messages and make calls.
