Locals Call for Changes Following Another Deadly Car Crash
Another vigil took place in Oakland to remember someone who recently died in a car accident. The tragic incident occurred when a white Dodge Journey minivan driver lost control and collided with a stolen red Kia Soul that abruptly cut before him. As a result, the Kia driver crashed into four parked vehicles, including a Honda Accord. Tragically, Joseph Morehouse Sr., standing near the vehicles, was struck by the Honda and died at the scene. The woman in the parked Honda’s driver’s seat also sustained neck injuries from the impact.
The driver of the Kia involved in the incident fled the scene and remains unidentified. Meanwhile, the Dodge minivan driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Jeanine Grayson, Morehouse’s niece, expressed her shock over the tragedy and suggested that the road’s ongoing issue of cars speeding in the rapid bus lane might have played a role. Grayson emphasized that the road has become increasingly perilous.
According to locals who attended the vigil, the recent fatal crash exemplifies the ongoing issue of reckless driving on International Boulevard. This problem has escalated since the introduction of AC Transit’s “TEMPO” rapid bus route two years ago. The intent of the TEMPO bus system was to offer a convenient transportation option for residents along International Boulevard, connecting San Leandro to downtown Oakland. However, to accommodate a dedicated bus-only lane, one of the two previously available lanes for private vehicles had to be removed, resulting in significant changes to the bustling thoroughfare. Unfortunately, since these modifications were implemented, dangerous driving behaviors have become commonplace, including illegal speeding in the bus lanes and hazardous maneuvers such as cutting off other vehicles.
Neighbors said during the vigil, there were continuous instances of cars illegally traversing the bus lane. In one particular incident, a driver who was unlawfully occupying the bus lane halted to engage in a conversation with a protester. When questioned about their choice to drive in the bus lane, the individual, sporting a sheepish smile, mentioned being in a hurry as their reason.
The vigil was organized by the Traffic Violence Rapid Response team, a group of advocates striving for safer roads in Oakland. This event marked their 11th gathering to mourn the loss of individuals who died on Oakland’s roads in the past year.
The Oakland Police Department said the incident is still under investigation, and they urge anyone with information to contact their Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.
