Caltrans Worker Suffers Injuries in Highway Accident
A Caltrans worker suffered significant injuries during a car accident that took place on Highway 101 in Humboldt County. The injured individual was identified as a 46-year-old man from Eureka and was hospitalized following the incident. According to police, the accident only involved the worker and a single-vehicle. The cause of the crash is currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Collision Information
The accident reportedly occurred at about 5:40 a.m. on Highway 101 to the south of Indianola Cutoff Road. The Eureka man was working in the number two lane on the southbound side of the highway when a 2001 Dodge pickup truck driven by a 65-year-old man from Fortuna approached the location. The pickup truck was reportedly heading south in the number one lane, as the second lane had been closed for construction purposes.
As the Dodge approached multiple work trucks parked within the second lane, the Caltrans worker reportedly entered the pickup’s path. The Fortuna man was able to significantly slow his vehicle but still collided with the pedestrian, knocking him to the ground with force.
Response
Emergency medical responders were immediately called into the accident scene. When they arrived, responders found that the Caltrans worker had been injured and had him transported to the St. Joseph hospital for treatment and injury evaluation. Hospital staff indicated that the man did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Additionally, neither the pickup driver nor any other individuals at the construction site suffered injuries.
Investigation
The Humboldt Area CHP office’s investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing and officers haven’t released any information regarding suspected factors. Police have asked that any accident witnesses get in touch with CHP in order to assist with their investigation. In order to report information to investigators, callers should use the non-emergency phone line (707) 822-5981.
Crashes that involve pedestrians frequently occur because of things outside of the control of the involved pedestrian and driver. For instance, a defective truck part may make it impossible for the driver to avoid a collision.
Pedestrian Injuries
Pedestrians are liable to suffer serious trauma in the event of an accident. Because they aren’t protected by safety features like vehicle drivers are, they can receive major injuries even if the crash is relatively minor. Because of this, pedestrians frequently need a lot of medical care, which can add up to a serious bill. The steep cost of accident injury treatment can leave people worried about their financial situation, especially if their injuries have made it hard for them to work.
Fortunately, it is possible for injured pedestrians to take action and seek payment for the losses that they have suffered through filing personal injury claims. These claims can help people obtain compensation by holding at-fault parties and/or insurance companies financially responsible. To learn more, it’s best to talk to a local attorney.
