Camarillo Police Department Conducts Bike Safety

The police department in Camarillo is conducting an operation this month that focuses on motorcycle and bike safety in the city due to a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The grant has enabled the police department to add more deputies to enforce traffic laws that are broken by drivers, which add to the danger for motorcyclists and bicyclists alike.

Camarillo Motorcycle Accidents

Since 2014, over 30 motorcycle accidents have occurred in Camarillo, including 17 in 2014 alone, according to a report by the California Office of Traffic Safety. A representative of the Camarillo Police Department stated that most accidents involving motorcycles happen at intersections that have no arrow for a left turn. However, in 2014, several of the accidents involved speeding.

Previous Accidents in Camarillo

Last month, the owner of a business that does pet grooming was riding on the back of a motorcycle when it ran into a train at the rail crossing at Las Posas Road. She was 23. The man driving the motorcycle at the time was charged with gross negligence and vehicular manslaughter. He entered a not guilty plea to the charges in court April 19 and will be appearing in court on May 25 for his pretrial hearing. The accident report stated that the man showed that he had consumed marijuana and cocaine when the crash happened.

A second accident, involving a man from Ventura, 29, resulted in his death when his motorcycle crashed in November. The man was an artist and a student. He passed away on November 20 as a result of his injuries.

Ventura County Accident Statistics

The OTC shows that there were 4,117 fatalities and injuries involving motor vehicles in 2014. Motorcycles were involved in 254 of these accidents and bicyclists were involved in 202 of the collisions. About one out of four of these accidents attributed speeding as a causative factor.

Bicycle Safety Operation

Police force deputies will also be looking for drivers who disobey the 3-feet minimum distance from bicyclists required by the Three Feet for Safety Act. In 2015, accidents with bicyclists caused by motor vehicles totaled 21 in Camarillo and surrounding areas, causing 18 injuries. Because bicycle riders are especially vulnerable, injuries can be devastating when a motor vehicle collides with a bike rider. They can range from traumatic brain injuries to spinal cord damage and other types of injuries that can cause permanent damage or require a long rehabilitative period.
