Car Accident Statistics
In 2019, 1.25 million fatalities were reported nationwide. Overall, this comes to 3,287 deaths each day. Approximately another 20-50 million people are injured annually in traffic collisions, and many are disabled.
Reasons for a Car Accident
The majority of car accidents involve negligence. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vast majority of crashes involve poor decision making and negligent behavior. Some of the most common types of driver error are:
- Distracted driving: Multitasking is a way of life today. The one place where this should not happen is when driving. The problem is it does, and distraction has become the major cause of car accidents in the United States. Drivers text, answer phones, reach for something in the glove compartment or eat when driving. This escalates the risk of a car accident and diverts the driver’s attention away from the road.
- Speeding: Driving over the speed limit causes many accidents and heightens the consequences. Not only is speeding a deterrent to maintaining control of a vehicle, but it also results in more serious injuries. This behavior makes it difficult for the driver to stop in time to avoid a collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian. Speeding does not always mean maintaining the speed limit but taking into account weather and road conditions.
- Tailgating: This type of behavior occurs when one vehicle follows another too closely. When the lead vehicle slows down or stops, the vehicle to the rear is unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the back of the car. Rear-end collisions are the most frequent type of car accidents and often happen at an intersection. Unfortunately, a rear-end collision leads to cervical strain and sprain (whiplash) that can result in years of disabling injury in some people.
- Impaired driving: About 30 percent of traffic fatalities involve an impaired driver.
- Not yielding appropriately: Failure to yield is a reason for many traffic accidents. This means providing the right-of-way to other motorists, bicyclists or pedestrians. Approximately 14 percent of all traffic-related deaths occur because a driver failed to yield.
- Running a red light: Many fatalities occur in intersections, and often it is due to a red-light runner. This reckless behavior leads to a significant number of injuries every day.
Driving a Company Vehicle
When a driver is using a company vehicle, it affects the way the accident is handled. For instance, if it is the company driver who causes the car accident, the chance is high that the claim will also be directed against the employer.
Investigating a Car Accident
Evidence is key to a successful claim outcome. To ensure that our clients receive the compensation they deserve, we send our investigative team to the accident scene. They look for evidence of liability and take steps to document it. For instance, the investigators speak to witness and obtain video evidence of the accident from different sources. They also use car accident reconstruction to place the vehicles before, during, and after the collision. Once all the data is amassed, the investigators release it to our legal team to construct a strong case for our clients.
