Car Crash Causes Chemical Spill

I’m Ed Smith, a Pittsburg Personal Injury Lawyer. A car accident caused a hazmat scare in the vicinity of Veale Avenue and Pacheco Boulevard in Martinez.

What Happened?

The car crash occurred at approximately 9:00 am on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. A sedan collided with a pool cleaning service truck that was transporting pool chemicals. The pool chemicals were spilled onto the roadway as a result of crash. This prompted a hazmat concern because the spilled materials, pool acid and chlorine, mixed together to form a chlorine gas cloud. A shelter was put into place for an hour and a half until the chlorine gas cloud alert was resolved.

Moderate Damage to Two Vehicles

The two vehicles involved in the accident sustained moderate damage. Neither motorist was injured due to chemical contact. They suffered minor injuries as a result of the initial crash.

Clean-Up Efforts

The California Highway Patrol, Contra Costa County Fire Department, and the Contra Costa County Hazmat Crew arrived on the scene to investigate and clean up the debris and chemical spill.

How Chemical Spills Can Hurt You

A chemical spill will can sometimes create a chemical burn when coming into direct contact with skin. There are many other types of chemical related injuries and each type can cause unique forms of burns. Chemical exposures are common in a home environment as well as the workplace. Chemical burns can be created from chemicals such as acids, alkali, hydrocarbons, pesticides and household cleaning supplies. The most common areas subject to chemical burns are on the face and hands. Chemical burns compromise about 4 percent in the burn injury category while causing a 30 percent fatality rate for burn victims. Chemical burns require patients to have extended hospitalization treatments and major complications when compared to fire or thermal burns. The toxic chemicals listed above cause the most deaths by ingestion.
