Yuba City Home Catches Fire After Car Crash
A car crashed into a Yuba City home on Sunday, May 9, 2021, causing the house to catch on fire. The members of the household were safely evacuated. According to a report given by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, the location of the incident was a private home near Anna Lane and Cherry Street. Officers report that the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the house fled into a nearby field. They were able to gather only a very vague description of the suspect.
A neighbor captured part of the incident on cellphone video. The corner home erupted into flames after a vehicle crashed into the garage. It is reported that the home’s occupants had been making dinner and had just gone out to look at their garden when the impact occurred, and they had to run for their lives.
One of the family members immediately called 911 and then watched in horror as the fire quickly consumed a large part of the garage.
Neighborhood Residents Want Action
Neighbors in the area of Sunday’s accident are fearful because this is not the first time a car has crashed into a home. They want leaders in Sutter County to take preventative, solid action.
While a car crashing into a house may seem like an unusual or freak accident, a neighboring house across the street from the house affected on Sunday has been crashed four times within the past several years. In fact, one of the occupants of the house that caught fire over the weekend was interviewed by news outlets in 2018 about a car crashing into his neighbor’s home – watch the YouTube video below to view that news clip.
Following the crashes in the past, officials for Yuba City installed a light beacon off of Cherry Street as well as guard rails, but those features did not stop this most recent event. Residents near the crash sites say they are afraid to fall asleep in their homes given the rash of incidents, and they are requesting that the City install a three-way stop and speed bumps.
Yuba City Speed Awareness
The Yuba City Police Department (YCPD) previously initiated a program that targeted drivers speeding in Yuba City neighborhoods. It was called the Neighborhood Speed Awareness Program, and it was created to promote the reduction of speed within residential neighborhoods through enforcement and educational efforts. It was described as an alternative to assessing fines and issuing speed violations within those areas.
Anyone cited for speed violations under the program could attend an interactive two-hour class by YCPD that educated attendees on the importance of speed compliance. The class also discussed avoiding pedestrian/bicycle accidents, the logistics of braking distances, and other collision prevention topics. After completion of the class, the YCPD would nullify the citation. The goal of the programs was to promote safer driving habits through education. Drivers could attend the class or go to court to deal with the citation traditionally.
It is unclear how long the Neighborhood Speed Awareness Program was in effect or if it is still being used. While the City maintains a webpage regarding the program, it appears to have not been updated since 2016.
