Car Thief Backs Into Elk Grove Motorcycle Cop
A man stole a car from an Elk Grove house on January 26, 2016. A short time later he was shot after he crashed the stolen car into a motorcycle cop.
The shooting occurred around 7:00 a.m. close to Sandstone Seas and Garnet Peak Way. The area is located near Elk Grove-Florin Road in the city of Elk Grove.
We have learned that a son went outside to warm up his dad’s car. He then returned inside his home for just a few moments. When he walked back outside, he saw the alleged car thief. The thief was driving off in the car. Elk Grove Police later identified the thief as 23-year-old Lance Bernaix. He is a resident of Sacramento.
Investigators said the son called 911. After that, he got in another vehicle to follow the stolen car.
A motorcycle cop from Elk Grove began pursuing the stolen vehicle into South Sacramento.
Bernaix drove into a dead-end street and the motorcycle officer was right behind him. The suspect put the stolen car in reverse and accelerated. This caused the police officer to be knocked off his motorcycle.
The officer shot Bernaix. We understand Bernaix was critically injured and taken to the hospital.
The police officer, who was not seriously injured, is a 14-year veteran of Elk Grove Police Department. He is currently on paid administrative leave. This is standard procedure for the department.
