BART Expands Carpool Program App

BART is continuing to expand its pay-by-app carpool system, making it more convenient than ever for riders that are paying for carpool parking. The carpool program is now being offered in all the West Bay BART stations that permit parking, including Colma, Daly City, Milbrae, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. The program debut in June of this year, and is offered in select BART stations such as Antioch, Warm Springs, Orinda, and Dublin/Pleasanton. It is geared towards riders that carpool to BART stations, letting them pay for parking ahead of time by using the BART app. Parking spaces allotted to the APP users are in the permit parking lot section, where spots don’t fill as fast compared to the daily fee section.

App Payment Features

The new parking payment app feature is a big step towards the modernization of BART’s parking payment and enforcement system. Payment is accepted via debit card, credit card, PayPal, or Venmo. It skips the long, dull process of waiting in line. It is also trying to crack down on carpool cheats by verifying the legitimacy of the carpool, requiring all riders to enter the fare gates after the app payment has been made.

Past, Present, and Future of the BART App

Bevan Dufty, Board President at BART, said that the initial testing stations showed promising data, including approximately 225 successful carpool payments per day. The carpool verification process was also found to be working as planned. Dufty also said that the program is not just being used to test the execution of app-based payments, but that they are also proud to be encouraging carpool rides to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

The in-app payment enhances the overall rider experience. At stations that do not offer parking payment via the app, riders have two options that both take up more of their time. The first option is waiting in line to pay. The alternative is to set up an EZ rider account, add money to their account, connect it to their Clipper card, and then get a hang tag to attach to their vehicle. BART hopes to expand the app payment option to all BART riders next year. However, it is initially offering to carpools with the intent of promoting ridesharing to their stations. The BART carpooling program will continue to roll out in 2020.
