An Overview of CBD for Pain Relief
CBD has been growing in popularity as a treatment option for chronic pain. Unfortunately, chronic pain is one of the biggest problems facing the medical field today. Too many people are dealing with serious discomfort on a daily basis. Some people might have nagging injuries that never fully healed from sports. Others might have suffered serious injuries in a traumatic accident. Individuals may also have nerve damage due to chronic diseases, motor vehicle collisions, traumatic brain injuries, or spinal cord injuries. For this reason, there has been a lot of research in the field of chronic pain. Now, it appears that CBD might be effective in the treatment of daily discomfort. On the other hand, this is a relatively new treatment, and there are several essential points that everyone should keep in mind.
What is CBD?
For those who might not know, CBD falls under a category called cannabidiols. This substance comes from the cannabis plant, which most people associate with marijuana. On the other hand, CBD is significantly different from recreational marijuana. It does not lead to the “high” that most people associate with the recreational drug. That high is provided by THC.
By removing THC from the equation, CBD has been rising in popularity for a number of medical purposes. Some families have found it to be effective in the treatment of recurrent seizures, such as epilepsy. Others have been using it to treat cardiovascular disorders and blood pressure issues. Now, it appears that it can be used for chronic pain, as well.
Used by Medical Professionals
Medical professionals have been getting on board with integrating this product into their pain treatment regimens. Doctors have said that this substance does have its benefits for certain people. Too often, people rely on Tylenol or Motrin for pain relief; however, these drugs can lead to liver and kidney issues if used on a long-term basis. There are also issues that arise with opioid and narcotic pain management regimens, as well. These drugs can lead to serious side effects, and overdoses might even be fatal.
On the other hand, medical professionals would also like to offer everyone a word of caution surrounding CBD. Studies have shown that this substance can be used to treat rare forms of epilepsy; however, there aren’t any human studies showing that it can be used to treat chronic pain. All of the evidence thus far is anecdotal; however, animal studies have shown it to be effective. At the same time, some doctors say that human studies are needed before it is used regularly.
Purchasing Cannabidiols
Finally, people should also be careful when they purchase CBD. Until recently, cannabidiols were labeled as schedule 1 drugs across the board. While CBD was removed from this list, the FDA has yet to release new regulations. Therefore, without these regulations, there is no way for someone to know how much CBD someone is truly purchasing. Also, individuals need to start slowly when taking this medication for the first time. People can react differently to this drug and should speak with their doctor before trying it as a treatment option. In the end, this substance can be effective for many people, but like any pain treatment option, there can be side effects.
