Chevrolet Spark Airbag Recall

The American automaker, General Motors, has issued a recall for their economical vehicles due to a defect in airbag deployment. The defect may increase the risk of injury to an improperly restrained young child sitting in the front passenger seat in the event of an automobile accident.
Defective Airbag Details
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a safety issue recall on May 9, 2017. The recall affects approximately 55,068 Chevrolet vehicles. The area of concern from this recall originates from the deployment of the front passenger airbag. If a young child is not wearing a seat belt and seated improperly, the deployment of the airbag may cause the occupant to suffer a neck injury. Due to this safety issue, these affected vehicles have failed to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) #208, regarding “Occupant Crash Protection”.
FMVSS #208
FMVSS #208 is the study of how well a passenger vehicle would protect its occupants in an incident of a front-end collision. The standard is oftentimes referenced as the “crashworthiness” of a vehicle, which includes testing procedures that evaluate frontal impact absorption. The objective of the standard is to reduce traumatic injuries to vehicle occupants to a minimal level.
Affected Vehicles
The following vehicles are affected by the General Motors LLC (GM) recall:
- 2016 to 2017: Chevrolet Spark
Recall Remedy
The manufacturer is still working on developing a remedy for this recall and has not yet created a notification schedule. Owners of these affected vehicles may contact the GM customer service line at (800) 222-1020 for more information.
Why are Recalls Issued?
According to the NHTSA, recalls are issued when the agency or a manufacturer has determined that a vehicle, car seat, tire or equipment has failed to abide by minimum safety standards or has created a safety risk. Oftentimes, manufacturers may voluntarily issue a recall before NHTSA is involved in the investigation. You may look up any recalls for your vehicle by inputting your VIN on your automaker’s recall page or SaferCar.gov.
