Chico Fatal Multi Vehicle Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico auto accident lawyer. A fatal crash involving four vehicles along Highway 99 in Chico took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 1, 2016. The crash caused the highway to be closed for a short time to allow authorities to perform an investigation.

What Happened?

A person driving a white Saturn was traveling along Highway 99 in Chico. For reasons that are yet unclear, the driver, 32-year-old Justin Rich from Corning, crossed over the double yellow lines where he side-swiped 21-year-old Adan Bautista’s car. Rich veered back into his lane but drove out of his own lane again moments before colliding head-on with a Chevrolet Sonic. The driver of the Chevrolet Sonic was identified as 55-year-old David Kahl from Chico. The impact from the head-on crash caused Kahl’s vehicle to spin out of control and crash into a vehicle belonging to 32-year-old Michelle Copper, from Chico.

Two Killed in Crash, Two Uninjured

The motorist in the white Saturn, Justin Rich, and the motorist in the Chevrolet Sonic, David Kahl, passed away at the scene.  Adan Bautista and Michelle Copper were uninjured and able to drive away from the scene of the crash with relatively minor property damage.

What Caused the Crash?

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. It usually takes a week or two for the CHP to release a traffic collision report. The report typically indicates who was at fault. Sometimes a police report is inconclusive or contains errrors. This can leave the friends and loved ones of those who pass away in a crash with many unanswered questions. It is important to contact an experienced auto accident attorney who can investigate the events leading up to the crash and protect the rights of those who have lost their lives due to the negligence of another driver. An attorney will determine what type of negligence (if any) was involved in a collision. Types of negligence may include speeding, distracted driving, drunk driving, etc. Contact an experienced auto accident attorney for more information.
