Multiple Injuries in Five-Vehicle Crash
Officers from the Chico Police Department (CPD) released a report indicating that an intoxicated driver ignored a red light on Thursday, February 22, 2018. This poor decision ultimately caused a collision involving five vehicles and left multiple individuals with injuries.
We send our thoughts for a full and speedy recovery to those hurt in this incident.
What Happened?
Officials reported that the collision occurred shortly after 5:00 pm at the intersection of Mangrove Street and Vallombrosa Avenue. A 30-year-old driver from Willows was traveling westbound in a minivan along Vallombrosa Avenue toward the intersection at a high rate of speed. The minivan driver allegedly failed to stop at a red light and collided with two vehicles that had been turning east onto Mangrove Street. The impact of the collision caused the minivan to launch into the air before coming to a rest on its side. Authorities have not yet indicated how the two additional vehicles were involved in the accident.
Serious Injuries
Personnel from Chico response agencies reported that three of the five motorists involved in the accident were left with serious injuries and were transported by medical ambulances to nearby hospitals to receive treatment. The specific nature and relative severity of the drivers’ injuries remain unreported.
Investigation
Authorities closed the roadway to public use for approximately two hours after initial emergency response while they conducted a preliminary investigation. Work crews were also called to the scene to remove dangerous vehicle wreckage from the intersection. Investigators noted in reports that intoxication by drugs appears to have been a factor in this collision and that the driver of the minivan is believed to have been at fault.
DUI and Liability
When an individual decides to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they make a decision that puts the lives and health of others in serious danger. Data by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that people who make this decision are responsible for nearly one-third of fatal collisions in the United States. When drunk drivers are involved in accidents, they are considered negligent and can be held responsible for all incurred damages.
Additionally, other parties may also be held liable for an accident. Parties that knowingly supplied alcohol or vehicle access to an intoxicated driver can also be held responsible for payment of losses related to an accident. These liable third-parties can include restaurants that improperly sold alcohol, vehicle rental companies that rent vehicles out to intoxicated drivers, and more. It is important to contact an experienced Chico personal injury lawyer when you or someone you love has suffered losses in an accident caused by a drunk driver.
