Chico Man Identified After Plane Crash
On Friday, May 3, 2019, the Tehama County Sheriff’s Department authorities released the identity of a man who tragically lost his life during a plane accident two days earlier. The decedent was identified as Lowell Daun, a 72-year-old man and resident of Chico. Additionally, two more individuals suffered severe injuries during the incident. However, these individuals have not been identified by authorities. I sympathize with Mr. Daun’s friends and family during this challenging period.
Crash Information
The accident took place on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Daun had been a passenger in a 1976 Cessna 182-p Skylane. Authorities reported that they could identify the plane as belonging to a Chico-based rental company. The plane was flying near the small community of Mineral at about 11:00 a.m. when, according to Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) preliminary reports, its wing made contact with a local power line. The collision caused the plane to crash in a nearby field called Child’s Meadows, a short distance north of the eastern junction of Highways 36 and 172.
Reports from the Oakland Air Traffic Control Center indicate that they received a call reporting complete engine failure before the plane crash-landed. The pilot of the aircraft told the staff at the control center that the plane would crash.
Response
Emergency medical personnel were rushed to the accident site immediately. When responders reached Child’s Meadows, they found the plane upside-down, with significant damage to its front end. Daun was discovered with critical injuries and, tragically, passed away on site. The pilot and second passenger were transported to a local hospital for emergency care. Updates on their conditions have not yet been reported.
Investigations into this accident are still being conducted by authorities of the FAA. According to officials, the FAA has classified this crash as an accident. However, a full report of the factors suspected to have been involved has not been released.
A Life Remembered
Lowell Daun is survived by two daughters, several grandchildren, and his wife, Dorothy. One friend spoke to reporters and remarked that he was “an amazing man,” noting that he was a member of the board of directors for a local day school for over a decade. Daun had also been a dentist for over 30 years and a hobbyist pilot.
