Chico Pedestrian Crash Causes Fatal Injury
On Friday, September 27, 2019, a Chico pedestrian crash left one person with injuries that tragically cost him his life. The accident involved a pedestrian and a large van and took place shortly after Sunrise on a municipal roadway. The Butte County Sheriff’s Department has since identified the decedent as Robert Castillo, a 59-year-old resident of Chico. Additionally, the Chico Police Department (CPD) has this accident under active investigation.
Crash Information
CPD reported that this accident happened just before 7:14 a.m. on East Lassen Avenue on the Highway 99 overpass. Details about how exactly the collision occurred have not yet been reported so far, and CPD has stated that their Major Accident Investigation Team is working to determine what caused the accident.
When emergency responders from the Chico Fire Department and Butte County EMS arrived at the scene, they found that a witness was providing medical care to Castillo, who had suffered major injuries during the incident. Castillo was placed on an ambulance and driven to the Enloe Medical Center to be given emergency care. Tragically, hospital staff was unable to stabilize him, and Castillo was declared deceased shortly after arrival.
Investigation
Police reportedly closed off East Lassen Avenue between Monterey Street and Joshua Tree Road for nearly four hours while investigators surveyed the scene for evidence that might help them understand the crash. CPD issued a press release on Friday asking for public help with their investigation. Anybody with information about the crash has been asked to contact CPD by calling (530) 897-4910 and referring to case number 19-7124. Police mentioned that they do not suspect substance abuse played a role in the collision.
