Chico State Bike Path Camera Installation
Three surveillance cameras have been installed along a Chico State bike path in order to monitor and prevent crimes from happening. The three cameras have been implemented by authorities in order to reassure the safety of all visitors that commute on the bike path.
Why?
The three surveillance camera pods were placed on top of three city lights spanning from Big Chico Creek to West Sacramento Avenue in Chico. The purpose of the installation of the cameras is to deter and provide evidence if a crime is caught on camera along the Chico State bike path. Each camera pod contains multiple internal cameras and can be accessed by the Chico Police Department at any time. According to Mike O’Brien, the police chief, he stated that he has observed multiple crimes in the following area. Brien believes that the camera pods will provide students and other bike pathway users with the reassurance of a safe commute.
Previous Chico State Bike Path Accident
According to Sandra and Dave Chesterman at a conference on Monday, August 29, 2016, their daughter, Kristina, suffered from an impact from a drunk driver’s vehicle on Nord Avenue. Kristina did not survive the impact of the drunk driver’s vehicle as a result of the collision. Dave Chesterman stated that Kristina would have been using the Chico State bike trail if she had felt that it was safe for her to use. However, Kristina had a discussion with her parents about the bike path and how she felt that she was not safe using it therefore she resorted to commuting on Nord Avenue. Sandra and Dave Chesterman believe that if the camera pods existed on the bike path, their daughter would have felt reassured to use it and would still be alive to this day.
