Child Injured in Antioch Car Versus Bike Accident

Child Injured in Antioch Car Versus Bike Accident

I’m Ed Smith, an Antioch personal injury lawyer. A young child was hurt on Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bike. This was actually one of two bicycle accidents in East Contra Costa County in the span of five minutes.

What happened?

On 30 May at 2:57 p.m., an 11 year old boy was riding his bike near the intersection of 18th Street and Wilson Street in Antioch when he was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle was travelling eastbound on 18th when the accident occurred. The driver immediately called 911 and stayed at the scene.

About the Boy’s Injuries

The boy sustained moderate injuries in the accident, but no further information has been released. In similar accidents we have seen broken arms and fractured legs.

Cause of the Accident

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Antioch Police. The driver is cooperating with investigators. At this time, the police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role.

Increased Accidents Involving Children During the Summer

Accidents involving children tend to increase during the summer months as the children are out of school, but adults are still going about their normal lives. This leads to more children playing near busy roads.

This makes commute hours especially hazardous for children living alongside residential roads used by vehicles as shortcuts throughout East Bay. Antioch and Pittsburg are especially known as pass-through towns for commuters. As a result, residential streets in both towns are highly trafficked by those looking to avoid highway traffic.

With the high volume of cars on the road and now increasing children on the road, children face a much higher risk of accident.

Other East Contra Costa County Bike Accident

At the same time, a second bicycle accident in East Contra Costa County required a medical transport helicopter to transport the victim to the hospital. This accident occurred on 30 May at approximately 3:01 p.m. A 16 year old boy in Discovery Bay near Brentwood was riding his bike near the intersection of Marlin Court and Willow Lake Road when he fell off of his bike.

About the Injuries in the Second Accident

The boy struck his head on the asphalt after falling off of his bike, resulting in a head and brain injury and loss of consciousness. Witnesses report that the victim was bleeding from his head and going in and out of consciousness after he initially regained consciousness.

After an initial medical assessment by the American Medical Response and East Contra Costa Fire Department’s paramedics, the boy was airlifted to John Muir Hospital for further treatment.

Cause of the Second Accident

There is no information on what caused the accident to occur. The boy and the bike did not sustain any damage beyond the head injury, making it unlikely that the accident resulted from a car striking the bicyclist and driving away.

As Discovery Bay personal injury lawyers we have seen a preexisting medical condition or a bike malfunction play a role in similar accidents, but there is no evidence to support either of these factors in this accident. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
