Preventing Childhood Dog Bite Incidents

There is no way to ideally ensure complete safety for children around our canine friends. Our goal is regularly to remind folks of common childhood dog bite prevention tips.

To help prevent serious injuries caused by dog bites:

  • Children should be taught not to approach, touch or try to play with any dog eating, sleeping, chewing on a toy, or caring for puppies.
  • Teach your children never to approach a dog in an attempt to pet it without the pet owner’s permission.
  • Children should keep a safe distance from growling, barking, frightened, or unleashed dogs.
  • Dogs are protective of their home space. Teach your kids not to pet dogs who are behind fences or in cars.
  • If a loose dog comes near a child, they shouldn’t scream or run. Instead, teach or child not to make eye contact with the dog. Tell your child to stand still until the dog goes away. After the dog loses interest, the child can slowly walk away.
  • If a child is knocked to the ground by a dog, he or she should curl in a ball, with knees tucked into his tummy and hands clasped behind his neck to protect the neck area and ears.
  • Teach your child how to properly pet a dog. Watch the video that follows for a demonstration.

Consult a Lawyer Before Talking to Insurance Adjusters

Time is of the essence in these types of cases. You will probably get a call from the dog owner’s insurance company. Do NOT give a statement or sign anything before speaking to an experienced dog bite lawyer. Let the insurance adjuster know you have an attorney and refer the adjuster to your dog bite attorney. We have the experience necessary to negotiate the best possible outcome for you or your family member.
