City Manager Petitions for Dixon Traffic Safety Improvements

I’m Ed Smith, a Dixon car accident lawyer. The city manager of Dixon drafted a request to the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for immediate safety improvements to Highway 113. The issue is scheduled to be discussed by the Dixon City council during its meeting on Tuesday, August 15, 2017. Additional details about the proposed improvements and the circumstances surrounding this proposal are included in the below article.

A Dangerous Roadway

City Manager of Dixon, Jim Lindley wrote to the city council in a staff report that Highway 113, over recent years, has proven to be an example of an “inherently dangerous roadway.” Lindley went on to explain that the point where Highway 113 meets with Midway Road has been shown to be an especially dangerous intersection.

As an example of the roadway’s danger, Lindley referred to a collision that happened on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, in which a 20-year-old resident of Elk Grove lost his life in a collision with a large tractor-trailer. The fatal accident, Lindley highlighted, occurred at the intersection in question.

Improvements

The intersection of Highway 113 and Midway currently only has a stop sign on Midway Road. The traffic traveling on Highway 113 is not required to stop and allow traffic on Midway to either cross or enter the Highway.

While Lindley did not detail the improvements specifically, he noted that they will aim to reduce the “close calls” and “many accidents” that occur as a result of the current roadway configuration. Ways to do this may include adding a stop sign on Highway 113 or even installing a new traffic light at the intersection.

Dangerous Dixon Intersections

Highway 113 and Midway isn’t the only cross streets in Dixon with a higher-than-average rate of accidents. Drivers in Dixon should also practice caution at the following intersections which have been sites of frequent injury collisions:

  • B Street and First Street
  • Stratford Avenue and First Street
  • Stratford Avenue and Pitt School Road
  • Pedrick Road and Highway 113
  • Parkway Boulevard and Highway 113

Collision Factors in Dixon

Those looking to drive and walk more safely Dixon should know that the majority of Dixon’s traumatic vehicle accidents occur between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. with the highest density of accidents occurring at these times on Fridays.

Additionally, 42.16 percent of Dixon’s accident involving injury over the last 4 years have been the result of drivers exceeding the speed limit. This makes speeding the single most dangerous traffic violation in Dixon.
