Work Begins on Bridging the Vine Trail Gap

Construction along Soscol Avenue has begun to close a gap in the twelve-mile Napa Valley Vine Trail. The trail spans from Napa to Yountville, but a portion of it is missing – the segment near downtown Napa between Third Street and Vallejo Street.

The Napa Valley Vine Trail is a popular walking and biking trail. Due to the missing section, users have had to find a way to bridge the gap, which often puts them close to vehicle traffic on busy Soscol Avenue. Signs along the trail that help users find a way to bridge the gap are not always seen and/or followed. The new segment will make the passage more direct and much safer.

Details of the Vine Trail Gap Closure Project

The construction that has begun includes widening the sidewalk on the western side of Soscol Avenue – this will become part of the Vine Trail. The northern part will venture away from Soscol, to an area behind a mattress store along the wine train tracks. The detour will lead the user back to Vallejo Street. The direct connection will be safer and easier for users of the trail to navigate.

To envision what the widened trail may look like, residents can visit the part of Soscol Avenue close to the Borreo Building. The owners of the building created a widened path when they completed renovations in 2018. The Borreo Building is currently home to Stone Brewing.

The winning bid to do the work on the Napa Valley Vine Trail was from a contractor who came in at just over $728,000. The work is expected to be complete by early 2022.

Because a portion of the Vine Trail will cross the wine train’s railroad tracks, installation of warning signal lights is required by the California Public Utilities Commission. Other parts of the project include the installation of curb ramps, adjustment of existing utilities that conflict with the new trail, and new signage and street striping.

The Future of the Napa Valley Vine Trail

It is imagined that someday the Vine Trail will span approximately 47 miles, from the ferry terminal in Vallejo to the city of Calistoga. So far, around 15 miles have been completed, most of which are in the Napa/Yountville region.

Other Upcoming Napa Valley Vine Trail Projects

More additions to the Vine Trail are on the agenda. An 8.2-mile span between Calistoga and St. Helena should be awarded a contract in the next couple of months. This project will cost in the area of $10 million.

Another 4.2-mile stretch is planned from the Vallejo Ferry Terminal to the city of American Canyon. This piece will cost around $7 million and will include a link to the San Francisco Bay Trail. This project is expected to go to bidding early in 2022.
