Collision Injures Arcata Man on Highway 101
I’m Ed Smith, an Arcata car accident lawyer. On Sunday, July 9, 2017, a multiple-vehicle auto accident left four individuals, including a man from Arcata, with injuries ranging from severe to minor. More information about this accident can be read in the following article.
How Did it Happen?
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) released a press statement indicating that the collision occurred just north of Eureka at about 10:34 a.m. CHP indicated in their report that an 88-year-old male resident of Arcata had been driving a 1992 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck on the southbound side of Highway 101 and had traveled into the left turn lane in order to cross northbound 101 onto Airport Road. At the same time, a 21-year-old female resident of Bakersfield had been driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata on the northbound portion of 101 in the first lane at about 50 miles per hour.
Reportedly, as the Arcata man turned his pickup into the northbound lane, the Bakersfield woman entered the intersection and the two vehicles collided. CHP indicated that the right front side of the pickup truck struck the front of the Hyundai.
Further Details
CHP’s report also notes that, after the initial impact, the truck spun around and ejected the elderly man. However, the pickup ended up protecting the man from the being struck by the Hyundai as it came to a stop in the road and blocked both northbound lanes. The Hyundai also reportedly spun after the impact and ultimately stopped facing south in the northbound second and accelerator lanes.
Injuries and Response
Humboldt Bay Fire, City Ambulance, and CHP all responded to the incident. When emergency responders arrived at the scene of the crash, they discovered that the man had sustained major injuries. An ambulance carried the man to St. Joseph Hospital to receive emergency medical attention. The driver of the Hyundai, as well as her two passengers, were taken to the Mad River Community Hospital, where medical officials indicated that they sustained minor injuries.
Resulting Traffic
CHP reports that US 101 closed for a short while after the incident so that emergency responders could properly provide medical care. The incident only contributed to minor traffic delays for commuters in the area.
Contributing Factors
This incident is currently under investigation. However, authorities have noted that they do not have any suspicion that drugs and/or alcohol had anything to do with the collision. Other possible contributing factors to this accident include distracted driving, unsafe roadway conditions, driving while fatigued, and more.
