Common Serious Auto Accident Injuries

Information published by research groups at UC Berkeley shows that Redding was the location of almost 5,000 injury-causing auto accidents between 2007 and 2018. These collisions caused over 6,500 injuries that ranged from minor to fatal in severity. While it may be unlikely that you will be involved in a car accident on any given commute to work or trip to the store, a single accident can be the cause of serious injuries that can dramatically change the way you and your family live. Despite this, many people don’t know about the serious types of injuries that car accidents are liable to cause. This article contains helpful information about some severe types of car accident injuries that commonly affect people who are involved in collisions.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

A very common type of trauma that car accident survivors suffer is a traumatic brain injury or TBI. These injuries are caused by damage suffered to the head that affects the brain. This trauma can be caused by a direct blow to the head, a puncture wound, or by strong jolting and shaking involved in the impact of a crash. These injuries are complicated and can involve a vast variety of different symptoms.

The symptoms of a brain injury can be hard to notice, and it sometimes can take days, weeks, or months for serious symptoms to develop. However, failing to notice a brain injury can be dangerous and leaving them untreated can lead to dangerous injury complications or secondary injuries. For this reason, it is important to get your head checked out by a medical professional if you suffered a blow to your head during a crash or if you experience any of the following symptoms after the accident takes place:

  • Confusion and/or disorientation
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty with memory and/or focus
  • Sudden mood shifts
  • Depression
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Difficulties with language
  • Vomiting and/or nausea
  • Sleeping problems
  • Seizures
  • Arm and/or leg weakness

Bone Fractures

Many people think of fractures as a minor injury, but breaking a bone can be a serious issue. Bone fractures often cause chronic pain as well as difficulties with mobility. These symptoms have the potential to make it difficult for people to enjoy the activities they care about or perform their job. On top of this, fractures that break the skin are liable to be infected, and infections that enter deep bodily tissue can be very serious. Some of the fractures that car accidents can cause include:

  • Arm fractures
  • Sternum and rib fractures
  • Hip and pelvis fractures
  • Leg fractures
  • Neck fractures
  • Vertebral fractures

Spinal Cord Injuries

Injuries that affect the spinal cord are often difficult to recover from. The spinal cord can be injured by compression and contusions, which can cause serious pain and mobility issues. Less common types of spinal injury include central cord syndrome and lacerations, both of which can have serious health effects such as paralysis. Other symptoms of spinal cord injuries include:

  • Pain in the arms, back, and/or neck
  • Muscle spasms
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Issues with waking up
  • Loss of sensation

Spinal cord injuries can also be the cause of secondary injuries like lung and/or bladder infections, bed sores, and others.
