Corning High-Speed Collision
I’m Ed Smith, a Corning car accident lawyer. In the evening hours of Wednesday, March 15, 2017, a high-speed accident involving two vehicles took place on Highway 99 westbound near the Orangewood Road exit.
What Happened?
Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 99 at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived on the scene they discovered from their investigation that a 2012 Mercedes was being driven at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 99 when it rear-ended a 2001 Dodge which was traveling in the same direction. The impact sent the Mercedes spinning off of the roadway. The force from the Mercedes hitting the rear end of the Dodge caused the vehicle to overturn.
Were There Injuries?
Yes. When paramedics arrived on scene they discovered occupants from both vehicles had suffered major traumatic injuries in the collision. The injured individuals were transported to Enloe Medical Center in Chico for treatment. One occupant in the Mercedes suffered minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Ongoing Investigation
The immediate area of Highway 99 where the accident took place was closed to through traffic for a short time while investigators collected evidence. Both vehicles involved required towing from the scene as they both sustained major damage as a result of the impact. This accident is being closely investigated by the CHP. Investigators have determined that speed was the main contributing factor in this accident. Road rage and distracted driving have not yet been ruled out as factors.
