What Happened?
A woman in her 60’s was driving her blue sedan along East Shields Avenue in the vicinity of North Fresno Street at approximately 1:00 pm. For unknown reasons, the woman’s vehicle collided with the rear-end of a Ford SUV that was turning onto East Shields Avenue. The impact of the collision caused serious front-end damage to the blue sedan and rear-end damage to the Ford SUV.
Was Anybody Injured?
The motorist and passengers of the Ford SUV suffered injuries resulting from the car accident. It is not yet known whether the occupants of the Ford SUV were hospitalized for their injuries. Sadly, the elderly driver of the blue sedan succumbed to their injuries.
What Caused the Accident?
Officials from the Fresno Police Department have not yet disclosed what caused the accident due to a pending investigation. A Traffic Collision Report by a local law enforcement agency generally takes one to two weeks from the date of the incident to be processed. However, investigators do not suspect that alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.
How to Protect Yourself on the Road
When driving or riding as a passenger of a motor vehicle, it is always strongly advised to wear a seat belt at all times. Avoid negligent driving habits such as drinking and driving and texting and driving. Obey the posted speed limit and all traffic laws. Inspect your vehicle and keep up with regular maintenance to make sure it is in roadworthy condition. Keep a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you. When taking long drives, be sure to give yourself short breaks to avoid driver fatigue. Following these safety tips will help to ensure your safety and the safety of others traveling on the roadway.
Car Accidents Involving Elderly Drivers
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were over 40 million licensed motorists ages 65 and older in the United States in 2015. Studies have shown that older adults stay independent and mobile longer if they drive a motor vehicle on their own. However, the risk of injury or fatality in an automobile accident increases as a person ages due to declines in physical, cognitive and vision abilities. A 2014 CDC report concluded that there were over 236,000 older adults treated in emergency departments and 5,700 fatally injured from car accident injuries.
