Crash Fatally Injures Merced Child

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced personal injury lawyer. An 8-year-old girl from Merced was traveling in a vehicle with two other young children outside Bakersfield during the afternoon hours of Saturday, June 24, 2017. Unfortunately, the young girl was involved in a motor vehicle collision which caused her to suffer fatal injuries.

What Happened?

A 26-year-old woman was behind the wheel of her 1997 Ford Explorer traveling westbound along Highway 58 in the vicinity of General Beale Road at about 3:00 pm. For unknown reasons, the driver allegedly allowed her vehicle to collide with the center divider wall along the roadway. The impact of the collision propelled the Ford across the lanes of travel and onto the right shoulder. The motorist then lost control of the Ford, which caused the vehicle to travel towards the center divide. The Ford crashed into the concrete wall and rolled several times before coming to a rest.

Investigators indicated that there was a 5-year-old boy, a 7-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl in the Ford Explorer at the time of the crash. Authorities believe the three children were not wearing seatbelts, which allowed the children to be ejected from the vehicle due to the impact.

Were They Injured?

The driver of the vehicle suffered multiple lacerations and a fractured femur due to the crash. The 7-year-old girl and the 5-year-old boy both suffered traumatic injuries and were treated at the Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield. Sadly, the 8-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the 8-year-old girl that passed away in this tragic crash. We wish for a full recovery to the other three victims involved in the accident.

What Caused the Crash?

The cause of the crash has not yet been released by investigators. It usually takes authorities from seven to ten days to process a Traffic Collision Report. However, officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) suspect that texting and driving may have played as a factor in the collision.

Similar Crash in Merced

A similar vehicular crash occurred in Merced on February 15, 2017. A 38-year-old woman was driving with her two children westbound along Highway 140 in the vicinity of the Orchard Drive off-ramp. For unknown reasons, the woman allegedly allowed her vehicle to drift off the roadway and collide with a concrete embankment near the canal. The two children both suffered injuries resulting from the accident and were transported via ambulance to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Sadly, the motorist of the vehicle passed away from her injuries due to the impact shortly after the crash.
