Crash Fatally Injures Teen Near Stanislaus County

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury lawyer. An accident involving two vehicles took place along the west side of rural Stanislaus County on the morning of Friday, September 1, 2017. Sadly, the collision caused a 16-year-old victim to pass away due to the severity of their injuries.

I would like to extend my condolences to the family members of the victim that passed away in this devastating car accident.

What Happened?

A 29-year-old Modesto man was driving his 1996 Honda sedan westbound along Gaffery Road in the vicinity of McCracken Road in Vernalis at approximately 5:40 am. At the same time, a 2002 Chevrolet SUV driven by a 30-year-old Modesto man was traveling northbound along McCracken Road approaching Gaffery Road. For unknown reasons, the motorist of the Chevrolet SUV allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign. The Honda and the Chevrolet collided at the intersection. The impact propelled the Chevrolet into a nearby field and overturned, ejecting one of its passengers out of the vehicle.

Was Anybody Injured?

The man driving the Honda was transported to the Memorial Medical Center for moderate injuries. His passenger, a 30-year-old Modesto man, was also treated at the same hospital for minor injuries.

The motorist of the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries and three of his four passengers all suffered minor injuries and were transported to different hospitals for injury treatment. The fourth passenger that was ejected out of the vehicle upon impact, sadly, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Accident Investigation

The exact cause of the accident has not yet been released due to a pending investigation by California Highway Patrol (CHP). A Traffic Collision Report may take up to 10 days to be released. Authorities from CHP released information regarding the detainment of one of the involved motorists. The man driving the Chevrolet was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on charges of driving on a suspended driver’s license and vehicular manslaughter. Alcohol or drugs are not presumed to be factors in the collision.

Preventing Car Accidents

It is difficult to determine when a car accident is going to take place. However, there are measures to follow towards preventing such incidents. It is best to engage in good and/or defensive driving habits, be aware of your surroundings and always follow the rules of the road. Distracted driving habits such as texting and driving can impair a motorist’s visual, manual and cognitive abilities. These impairments can be just as severe as driving under the influence. Previous studies have shown that people who text and drive are 23 times more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident than those who are not using their cellular devices.
