Crash Between Two Trucks Kills Both Drivers
I’m Ed Smith, a Nevada City and Grass Valley truck accident lawyer. A devastating head-on collision between two big trucks close to Cisco Grove on January 31 cost the lives of both drivers. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the cause of the accident. I would like to extend my sympathy to the families and friends of those who died in the crash.
What Happened
The truck accident occurred sometime around 10:00 in the morning when a wrecker that was heading north along Highway 20 crossed over into the lane heading southbound and struck a tanker truck head-on, which caused it to explode. The collision caused between 12,000 and 15,000 gallons of gasoline to leak from the tanker.
Collision Fatalities
The drivers of both vehicles were killed in the collision. Kilroy Towing in Grass Valley was the owner of the wrecker, and Tank Lines, a Stockton company, was the owner of the tanker truck.
Fire Resulting from the Crash
Fire crews arrived at the accident scene to attempt to control the flames. Although tanker trucks may be carrying several liquids, it was determined the tanker destroyed in the accident was carrying only gasoline. Because of this, the decision was made to allow it to burn, according to Bryan Ferrell, the CalFire chief of the battalion. Hazmat officials were present to prevent the escaping gasoline from going into Bear Creek and a nearby drainage ditch.
Officials Present at the Accident Site
Health specialists for the environment in Placer County were also present to determine any impact the accident and resulting fire might have on the environment. Officials from Caltrans and Fish and Wildlife were on the scene, the first to ascertain what damage occurred to the road and the second to determine actions needed for the environmental impact.
Road Closure
The CHP closed Highway 20 from Highway 80 near Yuba Gap to Uren Street in Nevada City until sometime Thursday morning. During this period, only local residents with identification showing that they lived in the area were allowed to enter the closed area.
Truck Accidents
Large trucks, along with buses, were involved in the deaths of 3,978 individuals in 2016. In collisions with big trucks, 97 percent of the deaths caused by the accidents were those in motor vehicles, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Because of the enormous size and weight of a large truck in comparison with other types of vehicles, a collision frequently causes severe injuries or casualties. When the accident is found to be the fault of the truck driver or company that employs the driver, a claim can be made for fair compensation. Calling an experienced truck accident lawyer is a good first step toward recovering your medical expenses, money lost through missed work and other costs.
