Cyclist Injured in Clearlake Hit-and-Run
I’m Ed Smith, a Clearlake car accident lawyer. An accident that happened in Clearlake recently caused a cyclist severe injuries. Authorities have only identified the cyclist as a 22-year-old man. The crash was reported by the Clearlake Police Department (CPD), who said that the driver who struck the cyclist drove away from the scene of the collision. Evidence suggests that the driver left even though he knew that the man he struck had been badly hurt. CPD is treating the accident as a hit-and-run and is currently trying to locate and arrest the missing driver. The most current reports available stated that the cyclist was in an intensive care unit.
Accident Details
CPD’s reports say that the accident took place during the night at around 10:15 p.m. The bicyclist had been riding northbound on the eastern side of Old Highway 53 and was in the area of Mendo Mill Lumber and Clement Drive when the vehicle approached.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was a 1980’s model blue-colored Dodge pickup truck. The truck had been heading north as well and reportedly struck the bicycle rider from behind. The impact caused the man to be thrown from his bike, landing inside of the northbound highway lane.
Witnesses also stated that the truck driver stopped and exited his truck after the crash. After doing so, the man re-entered his vehicle and continued driving north, leaving the injured cyclist behind.
Response
Area drivers called CPD and reported that a cyclist had been hurt in a collision. CPD immediately sent officers and emergency responders to help. After arriving at the crash site, medics found the cyclist had received major injuries and had him flown by helicopter ambulance to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
Investigation
CPD reports say that evidence found at the accident scene suggests the truck sustained significant damage to its front-end. This damage is reportedly most likely to be on the passenger side of the vehicle. Further information about the truck remains unreported.
Accident witnesses who have not yet spoken with CPD have been asked to call Officer Michael Perrault at the non-emergency number, (707) 994-8251. Those who believe they have information that could help officers better understand the crash or locate missing driver have also been asked to get in touch with CPD.
Hit-and-Run and Financial Recovery
Even when a hit-and-run driver cannot be found, injured parties may be able to claim money from their insurance companies in order to help pay for damages. Whether or not this is possible, as well as the amount of money that can be claimed, is determined by Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist policies.
