Dangerous Oroville Speeding Violations

Dangerous Oroville Speeding Violations – There are many ways that reckless drivers can cause a crash and car accidents often come with serious, and even fatal, consequences. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) reports that this state sees around one traffic accident for every 100 million miles traveled by all vehicles, a number that has steadily risen in past years. While dangerous driving behaviors are various and include things like using cell phones, operating a vehicle under the influence, and violating traffic signals, speeding is almost universally the leading cause of traumatic collisions across Northern California cities.

Speeding Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that speeding has been a factor in around one-third of all fatal vehicle accidents in the U.S. for more than twenty years. In 2016, the most recent year for which nationwide data is available, speeding played a part in causing 27 percent of fatal collisions.

In Oroville, there were 960 traumatic accidents between 2006 and 2017. Out of these accidents, 249 (about 25 percent) involved vehicles traveling at unsafe speeds. Notably, the vast majority (73 percent) of Oroville speeding accidents resulted in rear-end collisions. The next most common accident type caused by speeding was hit-object accidents, accounting for only about four percent.

What Makes Speeding Dangerous?

Speeding is against the law because it endangers motorists and raises the likelihood of injury-causing accidents for everyone on the road including bicyclists and pedestrians. Some of the ways that speeding makes driving more dangerous include:

  • Reduced effectiveness of vehicle safety features
  • Increased chance of loss of control
  • Increased collision severity due to higher impact force
  • An increased amount of distance necessary to stop a vehicle
  • Reduced ability to avoid roadway hazards

Additionally, driving at high speeds can be dangerous even when you are still under or at a posted speed limit. Certain conditions can mean it is dangerous to drive your vehicle at the usual roadway speed. These conditions include severe weather, poor lighting, active roadway maintenance, high traffic, and more.

Claiming Compensation from a Reckless Driver

Speeding is one of the behaviors that a driver can be considered negligent for in the event of a crash. This means that people injured by drivers operating their vehicles at unsafe speeds can usually claim compensation from the reckless motorist. Because accident injuries can have far-reaching effects on a person’s life, injured people are able to seek payment for a variety of different losses including economic and non-economic damages. However, it can be difficult to know exactly what you are owed in a personal injury case. If you’d like to learn about what kinds of payments may be available to you, watch the below video:
