Davis Residents Vote ‘No’ on Nishi
I’m Ed Smith, a Davis Automobile Accident Attorney. Davis residents have officially decided against the proposed Nishi Gateway innovation center. This project would would have included the construction of a 46-acre innovation center situated between the UC Davis campus, Interstate 80 and Olive Drive.
The Project Had Been Gaining Momentum
The Nishi project seemed to have gained momentum as recent as April. City council members in Davis were optimistic that federal and state funding would cover up to 80% of the cost. Unfortunately, for the Davis residents, the financial plan was not the only concern held by the Davis Community.
Residents Concerned about These Things
Some of the other concerns expressed by those opposed to the Nishi project included air quality safety concerns, traffic congestion, and lack of affordable housing mitigation. For example, some residents have highlighted the negative impact airborne particulates from brake pads and diesel engines have on the human body. According to form UCD professor, Thomas Cahill, the proposed location for the Nishi center has air quality conditions that are 10 times worse than the average freeway. Opponents also expressed concern that the city exempted the project from paying fees into the affordable housing account of the city. In fact, a lawsuit was filed by a citizens group this past March with focused on both the affordable housing issue as well as traffic impacts.
The People of Davis Have Spoken
Although the Davis City Council approved the project, according to the city rules of Davis, the people must vote to agree on development on agricultural land. As of now, the people have spoken.
