Davis Vehicle Hits Telephone Pole, Killing Child

I’m Ed Smith, a Davis Car Accident Attorney. When people hear about car accidents on the news, they are often dramatic, multi-car collisions that could have serious collateral damage; however, even single car accidents have the potential to be deadly, as a recent auto accident near Davis illustrated.

Vehicle Strikes a Telephone Pole

The accident occurred on Friday, May 20, 2017 at around 8 PM. The vehicle was traveling east on Russell Boulevard carrying three passengers, including a three-year-old child. While traveling in this direction, the vehicle suddenly left the road and struck a nearby pole. Somehow, after the collision, the vehicle continued to travel in its original eastbound direction. Shortly after, the vehicle started to roll over. While it is unknown how fast the vehicle was traveling, the three-year-old child was thrown from the vehicle as it was rolling.

One Fatality and Two Others Injured

Once the collision was reported, fire teams and emergency medical personnel quickly arrived on the scene; however, the three-year-old child from Winters, California was killed in the accident. One of the adult passengers sustained major injuries and the other adult passenger sustained minor injuries. Both patients were transported to the nearby Vacaville hospital, Kaiser Permanente, so that their traumatic injuries could be examined and treated by medical personnel. The exact cause of the accident is unknown because the California Highway Patrol is still investigating; however, the police do not believe that drunk driving played a role in the accident.

Vehicle Ejections

When passengers are thrown from a rolling vehicle, it is often because that person was not wearing a seatbelt. When a car rolls over, its momentum is continually changing direction; however, the passenger’s momentum remains in one direction until acted upon by another force, such as a seatbelt. Without the seatbelt, it is possible for a passenger to be thrown through a window, breaking the glass. This could lead to life-threatening consequences, such as a head and brain injury. These injuries could create chronic, lifelong complications or even cause death. In order to avoid having passengers thrown from a vehicle, it is important for everyone to wear a seatbelt and avoid driving habits that could result in a rolling car, such as speeding around curves. Prevention is the best way to handle such dangerous injuries and avoid a wrongful death.

We extend our condolences to the family of the child who passed away in this crash.
