Why Walkers Get Struck by Vehicles
Reports of a deadly accident involving a pedestrian are far too common in Sacramento County. Although drivers have a duty of care toward others sharing the roadways and to obey the traffic laws, far too many are negligent. Some of the types of negligence exhibited by motorists that can lead to a deadly accident involving a pedestrian are:
- Speeding: Speeders cause many accidents every year. However, a speeder who strikes a pedestrian can cause even more serious injuries and fatalities due to their lack of protection.
- Distracted driving: A driver isn’t thinking about the task at hand when they are texting, chatting on a phone, or adjusting their radio. By being distracted, the motorist can miss seeing a pedestrian in the street or crosswalk, which can turn into a deadly accident.
- Failure to yield: Running a stop sign or failing to yield to a pedestrian can result in serious injuries and fatalities.
- Drunk driving: Driving skills, reasoning, vision, and reaction times are all adversely affected when a motorist is intoxicated. This is a common cause of a deadly accident involving a pedestrian, especially after dark or during bad weather conditions.
- Making a turn: When drivers have a green light to turn, walkers may be in the crosswalk or stepping off a curb. These accidents commonly happen because the driver is busy concentrating on their own actions, not on whether someone on foot is in their path.
- Backing up: A driver exiting a driveway or maneuvering in a parking lot sometimes fails to look for a pedestrian crossing behind their vehicle. It often leads to a deadly accident.
