Pedestrian Dies on I-5 After Being Struck by Several Vehicles

A deadly hit and run accident occurred along Interstate 5 on March 25 when a pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles. The accident was investigated by the South Sacramento California Highway Patrol (CHP) after a caller reported a man who was kneeling in the center median and then laying down in one of the northbound lanes about 10:34 in the evening. The accident happened along the interstate close to Florin Road. When units arrived at the scene, it was discovered that the pedestrian had been struck by a number of vehicles. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the hit and run accident. The decedent was later identified as Jacob Chance Howery, age 26, by the Coroner’s Office in Sacramento. A GoFundMe page has been created on behalf of Jacob Howery and his family to help cover his final resting expenses.

Further Details of the Deadly Hit And Run Accident

As they were investigating the accident, authorities discovered that a vehicle, described as silver in color, had originally struck the pedestrian along the southbound lanes. That vehicle had fled the scene. The pedestrian then crawled into the northbound lanes, where other vehicles struck him. The drivers of those vehicles remained at the accident scene and were cooperating with the investigation. The CHP is requesting that anyone who might have information about the hit and run accident to contact them at (916) 681-2300.

The CHP has identified a man as a person of interest in the crash. He is described as a 20-year-old of Hispanic or Filipino heritage, 130 to 140 pounds and between 5′ 10″ and 6′ tall. He has black hair and wears glasses. The car the man was driving is believed to be a silver-colored Acura or Honda, and the bumper on the left front has a section missing.

Losing a Loved One in an Unexpected Accident

Losing a loved one is never easy, but it is compounded when the person’s demise is caused by the negligence of another. The unexpectedness makes it harder for the family to grasp what has happened and all the more difficult to deal with the loss. Emotions such as grief, shock, denial, and blame come flooding in making it impossible for those left behind to attend to daily tasks. This is when friends and extended family members are needed the most.

What You Can Do to Help a Grieving Family

At first, it may seem that there is little a friend or family can do that will help in this difficult time. It’s true that there is little you can say that will lessen the family’s grief. However, your presence is comforting. Since the family is focused on the loss of their loved one, normal tasks often fall by the wayside. This is where friends and family can really help. Doing jobs that need to be done, such as grocery shopping or picking up medical prescriptions, make it easier for the bereaved. Accompanying them when they need to make funeral arrangements is another way to help. Keep in mind that the grief the family feels extends beyond the funeral and interment.

Wrongful Death Lawsuits

When a family member dies, the family may experience catastrophic financial distress that can persist well beyond the immediate period. Many times, family members are so consumed with grief that they are unaware of the difficulties that this imposes on them. If the accident occurred due to another’s negligence, then they have every right to seek justice from the reckless party. This is done by filing a wrongful death claim. It can recover funeral and burial costs as well as compensating the family for the financial support the decedent provided and would have provided in the future. It also covers the emotional support the person gave to their loved ones. Close family members who lived with the decedent and were supported by them are eligible to file the claim. Your wrongful death lawyer can answer your questions about what needs to be done to begin the process of filing.

In the following video, lawyer Ed Smith explains how fault is proved for a wrongful death claim.

What Your Lawyer Can Do To Help

Beyond filing the claim, the attorney is responsible for proving that the person died due to negligence. At our firm, we dispatch our investigators to the scene of the accident to look for incriminatory evidence against the at-fault party. Our investigators speak to witnesses, use accident reconstruction techniques and obtain surveillance videos. We also review police reports for accuracy. If a hit and run driver was involved and is not located, we work with the family to use their uninsured vehicle insurance. In the end, our investigators hand over their findings to our legal team to use when they build a strong case against the at-fault party.
