Degloved Foot Injury
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento personal injury lawyer. Injuries of the feet can cause significant quality of life issues for an injured person because they can impair mobility. A particularly severe injury is called a degloving injury of the foot. A degloved foot can lead to some major complications for a patient that everyone should understand.
Degloved Foot: Causes
Some people may be unaware that a degloving injury is the term given to the class of injury that removes skin from an area of the body. It is possible that someone who suffers a degloving injury could lose some of the tissues under the skin also. A degloved foot is a traumatic injury which may be suffered in several different capacities, for example in an auto accident. While this may happen, a degloving injury of the foot is far more common in a motorcycle accident. Those who have ridden a motorcycle before have likely been told that they are supposed to wear the proper protection. If they are wearing flip flops or sandals, they could drag their foot across the road during an accident. This can lead to a degloved foot.
The Symptoms
When someone suffers a degloved foot, there are a number of different symptoms they may experience. First, significant bleeding is likely to develop because the skin has been stripped from the soft tissue and blood vessels underneath. If the nerves have been damaged as well, they could lose the sensation over their foot, making it numb. Some patients even have bone fractures of their foot which are painful, along with associated injuries that could be seen with a degloved foot. These symptoms will vary markedly from patient to patient depending on the severity of the injury.
Complications May Develop
There are myriad complications and comorbidities which may come up with a degloved foot. The most common complication with this class of injury is infection. The skin provides coverage and protection for the inside of the body against the outside world. When a sheet of this has been stripped away, it exposes the body to infections, even during treatment. Also, those who have suffered nerve damage could lose sensation over the top of their foot. Depending on the extent of this damage, the ability to feel their foot may never return.
