The Town of Dixon
The town of Dixon, California is situated approximately 23 miles outside of Sacramento. It was founded during the Gold Rush and has a rich agricultural history. The entire town was almost completely wiped out on November 19, 1883, when a terrible fire engulfed the Centennial Hotel. Strong winds of 50 to 60 mph caused the fire to spread rapidly, gutting businesses and homes. Most of the businesses in town, including six churches, were burned to the ground within a few hours.
Fortunately, Dixon rose from the ashes, and during the rebuilding, a city ordinance required new construction to be built with tin or brick. Today, Dixon is home to the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, a pristine landscape where U.S. veterans are laid to rest. Dixon also hosts the annual Dixon May Fair, which is the oldest district fair in California. The 2020 fair runs from May 7th through 10th. While we await the Dixon May Fair, there are many other exciting activities to check out in Dixon!
Araceli Farms
Located on the outskirts of Dixon is this beautiful lavender farm. The farm does not use pesticides or chemicals in their farming or in any of the products they produce from the lavender, such as lotions, oils, and candles.
The farm is often open to visitors and has some exciting events coming up:
- March 1, 2020
Smudge Workshop: learn about the history of smudging and the growth and harvest of sage. Receive information about the cultures that invented the concept of smudging, and be instructed on wrapping your own smudge bundle. This event partners with Magic Star Sage, a local sage farm. Participants will leave the workshop with one small and one extra-large bunch of dried flowers and sage. Part of the proceeds from this event will go towards the Native American Right Fund.
- March 7, 2020
The farm shop will open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to try new products and stock up on favorites.
- March 15, 2020
The farm will host a lavender wreath-making workshop. The time for this event is to be announced.

Yolo Ballooning Adventures
Pilot and General Manager Michael Veliz started this balloon ride business in 2013, intending to showcase the natural beauty of Yolo County from the air. Mr. Veliz has been working with balloons since he was 15 years old when he began employment with a hot air balloon repair company – California Balloon Repair, which was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. Mr. Velez now runs that business and oversees inspections and maintenance on balloons all over the west coast. His extensive experience places hot air balloon guests at ease.
Yolo Ballooning Adventures’ fleet totals three balloons, ranging from a four-passenger envelope to a 10 passenger basket. The FAA-certified balloons are manufactured in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by Cameron Balloons U.S. and are durable and strong. The balloons also outperform other balloon competitors. Yolo Ballooning Adventures’ top priority is a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable ride.
The balloon pilot meets guests at Turkovich Family Wines, which is located at 304 Railroad Avenue in Winters, California.
