Accident on State Route 160 Kills Both Drivers
A double fatality accident occurred on March 16 along State Route 160 near the Antioch Bridge in what appears to be a head-on collision. The accident happened around 4:45 in the morning, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Responders with the Rio Vista Fire Department arrived at the scene to declare the drivers of both vehicles deceased.
Cause of the Fatality Accident Unknown at This Time
There were no other occupants in the vehicles. Authorities said it wasn’t known whether alcohol consumption or drugs were a factor in the reason for the fatality accident.
Both Drivers Die in Two-Vehicle Accident
One of the cars was found blocking the southbound lane of SR 160, while the other had run off the road. Both vehicles sustained massive front-end damage as a result of the collision. The names of the deceased were released as Charles Edwards, age 26, and Jofny Flores, age 23.
Witnesses to the Double Fatality Accident Being Sought
Although no witnesses were found who saw the accident occur, an investigation into how the crash happened is being conducted by the CHP. Officers conducting the investigation are contacting those who phoned in to report the crash, and witnesses are being sought. Anyone who has information is asked to call the South Sacramento CHP office at (916) 897-5600 and speak to Officer Lindfeldt.
Loss of a Loved One in an Accident
It is always a terrible experience to lose a loved one, even when it’s expected. The anguish, grief, and shock experienced by family members when the death was caused by someone else’s negligent actions is even worse. It means they have no time to say goodbye and tell their family member how much they love them.
Because the family is grieving and emotions are high, the last thing on their mind is the financial repercussions of their loved one’s death following a fatal accident. However, they eventually realize that the financial cost will be much more than the expense of the funeral and burial.
Over the years, my law firm has helped many grieving families obtain the compensation they deserve for their loss when they file a wrongful death claim. Although it won’t help ease their grief, it can lessen the financial burden and bring family members a sense of closure and justice for that loss.
What Can Be Recovered by Filing for Wrongful Death?
The following losses can be recovered in a wrongful death lawsuit:
- Funeral and burial costs are recoverable.
- Lost wages until the time of retirement can be reimbursed, including bonuses, insurance, and pension benefits.
- Unpaid medical bills if the deceased was treated before death is covered, which is filed through a survivor action.
- Loss of inheritance is recoverable.
- Loss of love, companionship, and consortium between spouses is recoverable.
- Loss of guidance and training of the family’s children is covered.
- Punitive damages are sometimes recoverable if the death was intentional or egregious. Punitive damages are rarely awarded and must be filed for through a survival action. The only exception is in the case of murder, where the person who committed the act was convicted of the crime.
