Traffic Crash on Highway 20 Reportedly Involved Drunk Driver
A fatal traffic crash near Yuba City caused the death of a mother and her child on February 20 in a head-on collision. The crash happened in a rural area along Highway 20 near Acacia Avenue at about 10:15 p.m. According to a news release by the Yuba-Sutter California Highway Patrol (CHP) office, the driver of a Chevrolet 3500 pickup veered into an opposing lane and crashed into a Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV.
Young Woman and Infant Die in Traffic Crash
The pickup, driven by a Yuba City resident, age 43, was going east along Highway 20 when the vehicle swerved into the SUV, driven by a Colusa woman, age 25, which also carried her infant. Both died in the accident. Another passenger in the vehicle, a minor male, suffered major trauma and was transported to a hospital.
Pickup Driver Reportedly Attempted to Flee the Accident Scene
The pickup driver attempted to escape from the traffic crash scene on foot. However, he was stopped by CHP officers, who determined his blood alcohol level was over double the legal limit. Although the pickup driver was also hospitalized with moderate injuries, he reportedly faces serious charges for his part in the accident.
Alleged Drunk Driver Facing Serious Charges in Fatality Accident
Charges include evading officers, a double count of child endangerment and gross vehicular manslaughter for the two fatalities. Once the hospital has released him, he will be booked into jail. The names of those who died in the collision have not been released pending family notification by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s unit. The investigation into the fatal incident is currently under investigation.
