Downtown Sacramento Big Rig Crash
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento truck accident lawyer. A truck driver was moving down the highway in his big rig along Interstate 5 north during the morning hours of Thursday, January 12, 2017. The unexpected occurred when the big rig crashed along an off-ramp in downtown Sacramento. This crash caused morning commute traffic to become congested for a few hours.
What Happened?
A big rig driver was traveling northbound along Interstate 5 at approximately 5:00 am. For unknown reasons, the big rig crashed at the exit off-ramp for J Street.
Was the Driver Injured?
It is presumed that the driver of the big rig was in stable condition after the crash. It was reported that he was walking around moments after the accident.
Big Rig Crash Snarls Traffic During Morning Commute
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) blocked off the J Street off-ramp and the right two lanes of the highway until 9:00 am due to the big rig collision. Crews were at the scene cleaning up the spilled diesel fuel and to ensure the prompt towing of the mangled big rig.
What Caused the Crash?
Officers from CHP have not released an exact cause of the crash yet. It appeared that the big rig may have jackknifed, which may have caused the cab of the truck to sustain major body damage.
What is Jackknifing?
Jackknifing usually occurs when a motorist of a big rig abruptly applies the brakes. With sudden braking, the whole big rig and its trailer skids, which can result in jackknifing. The complex braking system of a big rig is very different from that of a passenger vehicle. There are three various braking components of this system, which can lead a big rig to the susceptibility of skidding. When a big rig driver suddenly brakes to avoid crashing into another vehicle, the big rig can become difficult to maneuver or some of the wheels may lock while the others do not. This causes the big rig to jackknife. Other factors that can cause a big rig to jackknife include taking a curve too sharply are, inclement conditions, and equipment or mechanical system failure.
