Driver Turns Herself in After Fatal Yuba City Hit-and-Run

On Wednesday, August 5, 2020, a 20-year-old woman from Marysville turned herself into the Yuba City Police Department (YCPD) after leaving the scene of a hit-and-run accident that fatally injured a pedestrian. The crash occurred in the early morning outside of the Sutter County Airport, and local officials have since identified the decedent as Norberto Ocampo, an 81-year-old resident of Yuba City.

Crash Information

YCPD reports that the accident occurred at about 12:40 a.m. on Garden Highway at the intersection of South Percy Avenue. The Marysville woman was driving a Ford Edge eastbound on Garden Highway when her vehicle crashed into Ocampo, who had been walking across the street at the intersection. YCPD indicated that the woman drove away from the site without stopping.

The accident was called into YCPD, who immediately sent emergency responders to the scene. When they arrived, officials discovered that Ocampo was critically injured. Tragically, the elderly man was declared deceased on-site.

Arrest and Investigation of Yuba City Hit-and-Run

YCPD indicated that the Marysville woman arrived at the police station around 4:30 a.m. to turn herself in. She has been placed under arrest on charges of hit-and-run as well as vehicular manslaughter and was booked into the Sutter County Jail. Officers indicated that they do not suspect driver intoxication was a factor in the accident.

A full investigation into the accident is still being conducted. YCPD has asked any crash witnesses or individuals with information about the incident to contact police to assist with the investigation. Callers can reach the YCPD traffic division at (530) 822-4795.

The Impact of Wrongful Death

After a fatal car accident, family and friends of the decedent often experience very intense grief and may feel overwhelmed. It’s common to feel a mix of confusing emotions or even to enter a state of shock immediately following the accident. Coping with grief can be difficult, but many can find comfort by relying on support from their loved ones.

However, for many people, it isn’t possible to focus on coping with their grief because of pressing financial issues. Families often lose access to services or income as a result of deadly accidents and may be shocked to learn how expensive burial and funeral costs are. Fortunately, it’s often possible to recover payments for these losses and other damages related to deadly accidents. This can be accomplished by working with an attorney to pursue a wrongful death claim against insurance companies and/or at-fault parties.
